Canaan Road (10TR/40M/15)
New Piano Album from Paul Ricard/Mistral Music)
The underlying theme of this collection of ten new piano pieces is journeys, a word which Paul Ricard interprets in the physical, spiritual and musical sense. Some of these pieces are inspired by Paul’s encounters while traveling, while others (Canaan Road, St. Patrick’s Crossing, Soli Deo and Pentecost) have underlying Christian themes, having developed out of improvisations played during services and religious retreats. Two pieces towards the end of the disc (Esbjorn and Bill’s Lullaby) pay homage to Esbjorn Svensson and Bill Evans, pianists who both died tragically young, leaving important recorded legacies which have been a major influence on Paul’s own musical journey.

Comments on the album:
‘The disc is fascinating - so much variety of texture and technique, and yet a subtly unifying theme. Congratulations!’ (Ray Cowell)
'The album is so lovely, and has definitely brightened a rather bleak day in Glasgow - the quality of the recording is fabulous. Many congratulations - I hope more radio stations will play your music!' (Dr. Mathilde von Bulow)
'Soli Deo has quite literally, soothed my spirit - wonderfully calming.' (Kevin Gallagher)
‘I really love this CD – so relaxing while traveling, and such an interesting blend of contemporary, jazz and classical styles. Some of the pieces have a great Celtic feel, and I feel waves of spirituality washing over me.’ (Lizard Muse)
'I so relish and admire this CD - I can't see where the music is going, which is always a good thing. Many, many thanks!' (Roger Craik)
'I think your music is utterly beautiful, and love the way the pieces flow. I also think that this recording works as a complete album - my favourite is Esbjorn, which I could actually see as film music. Great for contemplating/being mindful - it's a compliment - really loved it.' (Dr. Emma Pooley)
'The quality is great, and your playing is, of course, brilliant.' (Dave Allen - Erewash Sound Radio Presenter)
'Really brilliant, love it . . . just what the doctor ordered after long days of theological study'. (Darren Howie)
